PHNOM PENH, June 4, 2024 – Cambodia is poised to make significant advancements in renewable energy with the introduction of the country’s first wind farms slated for development in Mondulkiri and Kampot provinces.

Keo Rottanak, Minister of Mines and Energy, revealed the plans in a recent video published on the ministry’s social media platforms. He stated, "Cambodia will soon establish its inaugural wind farms, one located in Mondulkiri province and another atop Bokor mountain in Kampot province."

These wind farms are expected to enhance the portfolio of clean and renewable energy sources feeding the national grid. According to the Ministry of Mines and Energy, renewable sources currently account for over 62 percent of Cambodia's total energy consumption, with the majority derived from Chinese-invested hydropower projects. Other renewable sources include solar energy, biomass energy, and now, wind power.

With a current energy production capacity of approximately 4,000 megawatts per year and an annual consumption of about 2,400 megawatts, Cambodia is exploring the potential to export surplus energy to neighboring countries in the future.
